Every issue in Marker.io has a status that shows where it is in your workflow. Statuses help reporters know their feedback is being handled and help teams see what needs attention at a glance.
Available Statuses
Marker.io offers five statuses for issues:
Status | Description |
Open | The issue has been reported and is waiting to be picked up. This is the default status for all new issues. |
In Progress | Someone is actively working on this issue. Use this to signal that work has started. |
Waiting for Approval | The issue needs action from another stakeholder, such as client review, QA validation, or final sign-off. |
Resolved | The issue has been fixed. Reporters receive an email notification when an issue is resolved. |
Closed | The issue is complete and no longer active. Use this to archive issues you no longer need to track. |
Status Flow
Issues typically move through statuses in this order:
Open β In Progress β Waiting for Approval β Resolved β Closed
However, statuses are not strictly linear. You can move issues between statuses as needed. For example, if a client rejects a fix during review, you can move the issue from Waiting for Approval back to In Progress.
Enabling In Progress and Waiting for Approval
The In Progress and Waiting for Approval statuses can be enabled or disabled per project.
In Progress is enabled by default for new projects.
Waiting for Approval is disabled by default.
To enable or disable these statuses:
Go to your Website's project > Settings
Navigate to Statuses
Toggle In Progress on or off
Toggle Waiting for Approval on or off
Renaming Waiting for Approval
You can rename the Waiting for Approval status to match your team's workflow.
Common alternatives include:
Client Review
Needs QA
Pending Feedback
In Review
Awaiting Verification
To rename the status:
Go to your Website's project > Settings
Navigate to Statuses
Click the edit icon next to Waiting for Approval
Enter your preferred name
Save your changes
The custom name will appear throughout Marker.io, including in filters, the issue list, and the guest portal.
Changing Issue Status
Members
Team members can change the status of any issue directly in Marker.io:
Open the issue
Click the status dropdown
Select the new status
When you change a status, Marker.io logs the change in the issue activity.
Changing Status with Integration Sync Enabled
Even when Status Sync is enabled, members can still change the status of issues directly in Marker.io.
When you change the status in Marker.io:
The status updates in Marker.io immediately
A comment is posted to the connected integration (Jira, Linear, etc.) noting the status change
The status in the integration does not change
This allows teams to work directly in Marker.io while keeping the integration informed.
Guests
Guests and public reporters can see issue statuses but cannot change them. This gives reporters visibility into progress without allowing them to modify the workflow.
Integration Status Mapping
When you connect Marker.io to a project management tool like Jira, Linear, or ClickUp, you can map your integration's statuses to Marker.io statuses.
For example:
Map Jira's "In Progress" to Marker.io's In Progress
Map Linear's "In Review" to Marker.io's Waiting for Approval
Map ClickUp's "Complete" to Marker.io's Resolved
Automatic Mapping
When you create a new project and connect an integration, Marker.io automatically maps statuses based on your integration's built-in categories.
Platforms with built-in status categories:
Platform | How Marker.io reads statuses |
Jira | Uses Jira's status categories (new, indeterminate, done) |
Linear | Uses Linear's state groups (Backlog, Started, Completed, etc.) |
Azure DevOps | Uses work item state categories |
Notion | Uses status property groups (To-do, In progress, Complete) |
ClickUp | Uses status types (open, closed) |
Platforms with simple open/closed status:
GitHub, GitLab, Asana, Basecamp, and Teamwork only support open/closed states. Open maps to Open, and closed/completed maps to Resolved.
Fallback name matching:
When a platform doesn't provide clear categories, Marker.io looks at the status name:
Names like "doing", "in progress", "code review", "testing" map to In Progress
Names like "done" map to Resolved
Names like "canceled", "duplicate" map to Closed
Everything else defaults to Open
Manual Configuration
You can adjust the automatic mappings at any time:
Go to your Website's Project > Settings
Navigate to Status Sync
Configure which integration statuses map to each Marker.io status
For more details on syncing statuses with your integration, see Status Sync.
Filtering by Status
You can filter your issue list by status to focus on what matters:
Go to your project's issue list
Click the Status filter
Select one or more statuses
This is useful for finding all issues that need review, seeing what's currently in progress, or focusing on open issues that haven't been picked up yet.
Notifications
Marker.io sends email notifications when issue statuses change. Admins can configure which status changes trigger notifications in project settings.
By default:
Reporters receive an email when their issue is marked as Resolved
Assignees receive notifications based on project settings
To configure status notifications:
Go to your Website's Project > Settings
Navigate to Notifications
Enable or disable notifications for each status change
Members can also manage status change from their personal settings in Profile settings > Notification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to existing issues when I enable In Progress or Waiting for Approval?
Existing issues stay at their current status. No issues are automatically moved to the new statuses.
Can guests change the status of their own issues?
No. Guests can see the status of their issues but cannot change them. Only team members can update issue statuses.
What's the difference between Resolved and Closed?
Resolved means the issue has been fixed and the reporter is notified. Closed (formerly called Archived) is for issues that are complete and no longer need to be tracked actively. Use Closed for issues you want to remove from your active workflow.
Can I create custom statuses beyond these five?
Not currently. Marker.io supports the five statuses listed above. You can rename the Waiting for Approval status, but you cannot add additional custom statuses at this time.
Does status sync work both ways?
Status sync goes from your integration to Marker.io. When you change a status in Jira, Linear, or another connected tool, the status updates in Marker.io. When you change a status in Marker.io, a comment is posted to the integration, but the integration's status does not change.
