In this guide, we'll walk you through customizing how issues are reported on your live site, including installing the widget and adjusting visibility settings to fit your needs.

Setting Up the Marker.io Widget

First, you'll need to install the Marker.io widget on your website. You can do this using a JavaScript snippet, which gives you full control over who can report issues and when they can do so.

To access these settings:

  1. Go to your Marker.io dashboard.

  2. Select your project.

  3. Navigate to Project Settings > Widget > Button > Button Visibility.

From here, you can choose from a few different options on how to manage who can submit reports.

Issue Collection Settings: Who Can Report Problems?

Marker.io provides flexible options depending on how open you want your issue collection process to be.

1. Allow Anyone to Submit Issues (Default Setting)

If you want all website visitors to be able to report bugs, no changes are needed. This setting is great for staging or testing environments where everyone can give input.

2. Limit Reporting to Specific Members or Guests

To restrict who can submit issues, you can choose to only allow people logged in to your Marker.io account. This is ideal for internal projects or live websites when you want reports to come only from your team or trusted users.

3. Limit Reporting to a Selected Group Using Hidden Access

If you’d rather limit issue submissions to only those "in the know," you can hide the reporting button entirely. Users can still access the reporting tool in two ways:

  • Add ?bug to the end of the URL.

  • Use the keyboard shortcut (⌘ U for Mac, Alt U for Windows/Linux).

This approach keeps the tool available but discreet, ensuring only those aware of the access methods can submit issues.

Collecting Issues via the Browser Extension

If you prefer using the Marker.io browser extension, this option allows users to report issues directly from their browser. For this to work:

  1. Users must be invited to your Marker.io account.

  2. They need to install the Marker.io browser extension.

This method provides an additional layer of control, as only selected users with the extension can send in their reports.

Wrapping Up

Marker.io offers a flexible setup, whether you’re looking for wide-open issue reporting or a more controlled environment. By configuring the widget visibility and access methods, you can perfectly tailor the tool to your needs.
